A Little About Us

Kyle

I was born in Troy, Alabama and for most of my life, I lived on a small farm about 10 miles north of Luverne, Alabama in the community of Fullers Crossroad.  I lived on a farm, in a house made from heart pine that was harvested from the same property.  The farm contained about 100 acres, half made up of mixed timber and the other half being cultivatable farm land.  By the time I was three or four my family had stopped farming full time and rented out most of the property to local farmers.  Of course we still had a huge garden each year, which my Mother and Dad loved to work.  My younger sister and I worked in the garden too, although I think it is fair to say we did not exactly “love it”.  I have many memories of summer time lunches where I would place fresh peas, tomatoes, and fried okra on my plate then fully cover it with the fresh cream corn all harvested from our garden.  My wife and I have tried numerous times to emulate the process and preparation of my Mother’s cream corn, but have never got it just right.  I could go on forever about my Mother’s cooking; she loved to cook and see people enjoy her meals.

About 100 yards south of our house there were wild plum trees and black berry bushes, which provided my family many natural snacks and even adventures.  Lead by my Mother, we were always picking something throughout the year.  Although I did not particularly like to harvest the garden, I always loved harvesting wild berries and plums. Behind the house were four large pecan trees where I played for many hours.  I made tree houses and jumped on imaginary Indians for many years.  We always had some type of livestock, mostly cows and pigs, around the farm.  The animals became great playmates because we did not have many children around.  Initially the farm animals, then later the wildlife, always fascinated me and consumed most of my interest through high school.

After high school I left home to attend college and majored in accounting.  While at college I met my wife which turned out to be the best decision of my life.  We have been married for almost 35 years and have a great daughter and son.  Naturally my accounting degree lead to office jobs but my interest and passion about nature has never dulled.   I have always encouraged my children to respect and be thankful for nature and the many wonders that we are blessed with on this earth.  In 1990 I helped the gulf region of Alabama to become a US Department of Agriculture “Resource, Conservation, and Development” area. Gulf Coast RC&D has been a great way to stay connected to my roots.  It has also allowed me to work on many projects from research on grass feed beef to raising fresh water craw-fish.

I was born, raised, and still live in Alabama.  I have always loved and been fascinated by the outdoors.  I never grew up on a farm, but I always visited my grandfathers and spent countless hours outdoors playing as a child and teenager.  No matter what it was it was always more fun outdoors.  I remember playing basketball, football, baseball, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping throughout my entire childhood.  My father took me camping several times a year and created memories that will last a lifetime with me.  I remember walking along the beach with my mom and being drug inside after dark while my friends and I were still playing ball after dark.  We would wear ourselves completely out and basically fall out after we came in.

Love for the outdoors must really be in my blood because now my son, 15 months old, constantly wants to go outside.  He gets it from his mother too, because she also loves working and playing outside.  It does not look like he will be a video game junkie like many children are today.  I can not wait until he is old enough to to go with my father and grandfather to the family farm and create the special memories that I did as a child.
